A Mother's ‘Divided Self' in Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse

Marie Geraldine Rademacher

Lily Briscoe’s statement “About life, about death; about Mrs Ramsay.” exquisitely encapsulates Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse, by positioning the mother figure at the centre of the story. Previous critical discourse indicates that Mrs. Ramsay has been widely regarded as “unquestionably one of the most perfect statements of feminine sensibility, intuition, and maternal comfort in literature, as a magnetic force, entering and irradiating the lives of those around her.” She was also considered an idealized vision of wife and mother, as a symbol of lifeʼs victory over death and as a model of perfection. Yet, counter interpretations to Mrs. Ramsay’s glorified portrayal, although less common, still exist. Glenn Pedersen sees her as a negative force which hinders the integration of the family while she lives. This mixed reaction arouses from Woolf’s intention to disrupt the myth of the ʻbenevolent, selfless mother.’ In fact, I contend that Mrs. Ramsay is a narcissistic mother who is in constant need for recognition either from her family or guests for her good deeds and her performance as the perfect hostess and ideal mother. Although she shows signs of self‑absorption and is constantly on the lookout for self- enhancement, she is nonetheless capable of caring for her family. Her narcissistic personality is revealed to act as a shield and is rather a means for ʻself‑preservation’, a protection from losing sight of her own self.

Biography:

Marie Geraldine Rademacher is currently a part-time lecturer of English Literature at Sophia University and Seikei University. She is also a researcher at the University of Tokyo. Her research focuses on travel narratives written by European women who came to Japan in the early 20th century. She has recently published a chapter on British and German scientific exploration in the Asian-Pacific Region, which was part of the edited collection The Discourse of British and German Colonialism published in July 2020 by Routledge and CRC Press.
In September 2017, she received her PhD in English Studies from Frei Universität Berlin, Germany. As part of her dissertation project, she examined the representation of narcissistic mothers in the works of several modernist writers such as D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. This resulted in the publication of her (200-page-long) monograph Narcissistic Mothers in Modernist Literature in September 2019 by the German publisher Transcript Press.

“There was something middling about Forster; he is halfway to where people want him to be.” Alberto Fernández Carbajal, Compromise and Resistance in Postcolonial Writing: E. M. Forster's Legacy (2014) や、Elsa Cavalié and Laurent Mellet eds, Only Connect: E. M. Forster's Legacies in British Fiction (2017) 、そしてEmma Sutton and Tsung‑Han Tsai eds, Twenty‑First‑Century Readings of E. M. Forster's Maurice

Maurice

Howards EndOn Beauty

 E. M. フォースター没後半世紀を契機とし、彼の「偉大さ」 (greatness) を再認識しよう とする機運が高まっており、2020年3月には “What's So Great about E. M. Forster?”
